The next morning, Blake sat on the balcony overlooking the gulf. The offshore breeze riffled through her hair, and the screaming of gulls filled the air. She tried to feel something about this place, to recapture her love of this barrier island. But she couldn’t. She would never feel the same about Galveston. This was where Krystal had been killed. That would always be her memory of the island. Not the long walks on the beach. Not lying in the sand, not dancing at Bettie Brown’s. This was a place of death, loss, and sorrow now. The sooner she could leave it behind, the better.

She looked down the seawall toward the place she’d met Lindsay. It hurt, knowing she was walking away from her as well. She had felt for a brief moment in time like she was connected to life. With Lindsay’s hand in hers, she felt solid, present. Will I ever feel that again? Am I going to spend the rest of my life regretting the what-ifs? She rested her head on her good arm. Am I making the right decision? Only time would tell.

“Blake?” Brenda called from inside.

“Yes?”

“We’re going to go meet with the funeral director. Do you want to come?”

“No, I’d rather stay here, if that’s okay?”

“Of course it is, dear. We just need to make arrangements for Krystal to get home to Austin. I do hope you’ll speak at the service if you can?”

Blake nodded. She would absolutely speak for her best friend. Xanax would help, and she would get through it. The Strausses had refilled her prescription for her, so she had her medication, but she didn’t have any of her personal belongings. The rental agency said the police had collected everything from the house, including her Prius. She needed to call and find out how to retrieve her things. She was anxious about calling, afraid Lindsay would answer, that she’d have to confront those emotions, too, but that was ridiculous. Lindsay was a law officer, not a receptionist. She was being foolish and giving in to her disorder. She just needed to get over herself and call.

She went back into the room and picked up the house phone. Somehow the loss of her cell phone was no worry at all. Without Krystal, she didn’t feel any need for it. She asked the desk to connect her to the DPS.

“TDPS. How can I direct your call?”

“Hello? Yes, I need to find out how to locate my personal belongings.”

“Is this in regard to a robbery?”

“No, ma’am. I was…It’s…My friend was killed.” She rushed through it. “I was abducted. All of my things were collected by the police.”

“We are the Department of Public Safety, ma’am, not the police. Galveston Municipal Police can be reached at—”

“But you were the police who were there.”

“Then the incident must have been outside the city limits. May I have your name?”

“Blake Campbell.”

“Please hold.”

Blake waited while the woman found out where her things were. She came back on the line a few minutes later.
